By 2035, Africa will be the world’s fastest urbanizing region. Reflecting the rapid growth of the continent’s youth population, six cities on the continent will have populations of more than 10 million, according to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Angola’s capital Luanda and Tanzania’s commercial hub Dar es Salaam will join Cairo, Kinshasa, Lagos and the greater Johannesburg region as megacities with populations of more than 10 million, according to the report. At this point, Africa will also have 17 metropolitan areas with populations of over 5 million and about 100 cities with populations of over 1 million. Of these, Addis Ababa is expected to grow the fastest, with an average annual growth rate of 10.6%, but Kampala, Dar es Salaam and Abidjan are also recording significant growth rates of about 9% or more.

Rapid urbanization (more than half of Africans are predicted to live in cities by 2035) will unlock wealth, energy and new business opportunities, according to the report. But the report adds that “overcrowding, informal settlements, high unemployment, poor public services, overstretched public services and the burden of climate change are just some of the major challenges urban planners must address.”
The EIU said the “emerging megacities” include a 600-kilometer stretch of West African coast that stretches east from Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire through Ghana, Togo and Benin to Lagos in Nigeria, which “could become one of the world’s largest urban corridors by 2035” and would be home to more than 50 million people.
Other potential megacities identified by the EIU include the “Great Lakes urban centres,” including Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt, Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa, Nairobi in Kenya and Kampala in Uganda. Clusters also emerged in Morocco and Algeria.
